What is an Intimacy Coordinator?
As defined by SAG-AFTRA: “An intimacy coordinator is an advocate, a liaison between actors and production, and a movement coach and/or choreographer in regard to nudity and simulated sex, and other intimate and hyper-exposed scenes.”
Do I need an Intimacy Coordinator?
If you’re creating a film, tv show, music video or any other visual art project and your script calls for nudity, simulated sex, or other types of intimacy (including kissing!), it’s highly recommended that you hire an intimacy coordinator to create a safe, effective performance environment.
What does an Intimacy Coordinator do?
Intimacy coordinators utilize a variety of protocols and techniques to support the creation of intimate scenes in a tv, film, or other video production. According to the Standards and Protocols for the Use of Intimacy Coordinators released by SAG-AFTRA in 2020, an intimacy coordinator:
• Acts as an advocate who serves as a liaison between actors and a production;
• Ensures that performers and other production personnel adhere to proper safety protocols;
• Serves as a resource in realizing a director’s vision;
• Assumes the role of a movement choreographer if requested by the director to enhance believability;
• Strives to build an environment in which actors understand what is expected of them in hyper-exposed scenes and to give their informed and continued consent.
What does an Intimacy Coordinator actually do?
The skills and duties your intimacy coordinator will utilize on set will depend on the needs of your production and cast.
For example, some performers and directors may feel extremely comfortable creating their own choreography for an intimate scene. The intimacy coordinator will support that work primarily with consent language and advocacy tools.
Other teams may require more support to create movements that tell their intended story. On this set, the intimacy coordinator will fill a more prominent choreographer role in addition to their other duties.
Do I Need an Intimacy Coordinator for a Music Video?
If your music video is spicy, I highly recommend yes! Music videos are great mediums for more radical forms of artistic expression and if that includes nudity or simulated sex, it's important to provide performers with the tools and support they need to execute these scenes accurately and safely.
